Drawing Club at Whitehill Junior School

Booking available for Spring, 2nd half term

BEGINS WEDNESDAY 26TH FEBRUARY 2025

3.15-4.45pm

Who is Drawing Club for?: It’s for children at Whitehill Junior School who want to draw more! The aim of the club is to have fun drawing and is open and welcoming to all.

Why? Drawing is good for all of our well being - it’s fun and it can be really calming. It can help to understand our thoughts and feelings and the world around us. I hear so many adults and children say “Oh but I can’t draw…” or “I’m not very good at drawing”. Drawing Club is here to show you that you CAN and that every one of us can feel good spending time drawing, connecting with the paper and ourselves - it’s not about the final outcome, it’s about enjoying the process of drawing and making - every mark made is valid! Drawing is fun! The time spent together drawing will support our wellbeing, teamwork and speaking and listening skills alongside growing our creativity, imagination and confidence.

What will we do there? We’ll have lots of fun with different drawing games and activities, each week there’ll be a different theme. There will be a variety of drawing materials and papers available to make marks with - we’ll use pencils, pens, chalk pastels, charcoal, paint sticks, oil pastels, graphite sticks, ink, monoprinting, scissors, glue, collage with different types of paper. We’ll use different tools and techniques, make mistakes and turn them into something new. We’ll draw on our own and work together on drawings in groups and pairs too. We’ll use big paper and small paper, we’ll also draw on things that aren’t paper. We’ll draw from observation (things we can see) and also draw from imagination and explore abstract drawing too.

How does the club work? It is a process led drawing club - this means it’s not about making perfect piece of artwork to hang in a gallery each week. It’s about exploring different methods of drawing, working on individual and group projects. There’ll be viewing of our work and take home at the end of the final session of each half term. There will be 12 places available to keep the group small.

Children will come to the group room just after school finishes. Please bring a snack and a drink, and after saying hello and a few minutes rest , we’ll start the session. The drawing activities will last for about an hour, then we’ll look and talk about our work together and then we’ll all help tidy away at the end of the session and I will give the children ideas if they want to carry on working on the theme at home.

Who is Alexa? I’m a local artist and photographer and I really LOVE making art - I lead a local drawing group for adults called Hitchin Draw More. You can find some of my artwork by clicking the art tab at the top of this page. I work with the Broadway Gallery in Letchworth as part of their Teacher Artist exchange project working with Letchworth schools creating art projects to support children’s wellbeing. I also host some of their weekend Family Arts sessions at the gallery too. I am a qualified teacher - before I became an artist and photographer I was a primary school teacher in a North London school, and I have over 10 years of experience working with children and young people. Both of my children go to Whitehill and I have loved running drawing club over since October 2024.

I have public liabilty insurance and am fully DBS checked. Here you can find my safeguarding and privacy policies. First Aid will be provided by Whitehill Junior School staff if required, and Whitehill Junior School fire safety routines and policies will be observed.

I love drawing, I draw most days. Just for fun. Here’s a short video showing a sketchbook I took to the swimming pool 2022-2023. I made quick sketches while my children had swimming lessons or while I was at the outdoor pool. You have to draw realllllly quickly to capture movement! These small drawings aren't perfect finished pieces (does such a thing exist?). They are a series of drawing notes which filled a whole sketchbook and later I used them to remind me when I created a larger painting. I loved capturing the movements of the swimmers and the joy of being in the water!
