Spend a day connecting with your camera and the world around you with Alexa Loy in and around the grounds of The Farmhouse at Redcoats. Alexa will guide photographers (from budding enthusiasts getting to grips with their camera, through to those with a bit more experience looking to release their creative flow).

Pull up a chair at our Farmhouse table there’s a warm hello for you, all you’ll need is your camera, a notepad and an open heart. Alexa will guide our small group through cornerstone topics such as light, composition, colour and shape in a day long workshop retreat designed to blend practical skills with a more reflective and creative space.

We will be exploring the “classroom based” theory (luckily it will be less of a stuffy classroom and more of a cosy private dining room) out in the grounds as we go on a photographic ramble taking in beautiful landscapes, hedgerows laden with fruit, bee hives and colourful gardens.

The day will lead you to create meaningful images, where you’ll think about your motivation for photography, connect with the world around you, give your creative soul a boost, meet like minded folk and inspire your photography work. It will include refreshments in The Old Kitchen and a delicious Sunday lunch from the Farmhouse’s two rosette kitchen, learning materials and a portrait session if you wish.

The People

Alexa Loy: This is me!

Alexa Loy is an award winning Hitchin photographer, who is a happy creative soul making thoughtful, meaningful images from the heart of her clients’ stories.  Founding her business in 2011, she enjoys photographing family sessions, weddings and creating images for independent brands. Photography for Alexa is all about connection and community, this year she has enjoyed hosting photo walks around Hitchin, and a long weekend photography retreat down in St Ives, Cornwall.

Ruth Nye: well intentioned multi-tasker, mum, wife, big sis, friend, marketer, life coach and founder of the Bumblebee Collective. Founding Bumblebee Collective as a hive for curious minds bringing together the interested and the interesting. As busy bees, we find that the frenetic pace of modern life can stamp out curiosity and connection, so our mission is to bring people together to nourish the mind, body and soul, and spark conversation, cross pollinate ideas and inspire action.

You: we would love to welcome you on the workshop day retreat, it would be ideal for you if you want to develop your confidence to shoot and grow as a photographer, and connect with your work . If you have a DSLR camera with some idea of how to use it and want to develop those skills (or even if it’s still sitting in it’s box, waiting for that one day when you’ll learn to use it, come along!)

The Content

Tailored: We’ll cover several topics during the day, and it will be tailored to those who book onto the workshop - we’ll send you a questionnaire when you book your ticket. We’ll talk and have a play with getting to grips with your camera - how making mistakes is a good thing!

Light, composition, colour, shape - a mixture of practical, reflective and creative.  We’ll go on a photo walk around the grounds of the Farmhouse, where we will work to create mindful images, connecting with your camera and the environment around you.

We’ll also focus photographing portraits - Alexa will share some handy tips you can use in your every day life and have ‘shoot swap’ session where we will practice photographing each other.  This comes with an open invitation for a portrait by Alexa of every attendee. If you prefer staying behind the camera that is absolutely fine but you will be able to observe the process and connection of a portrait shoot.

The Day

Lunch: We can’t have your creativity running on empty…included in the retreat is a delicious 2 course Sunday lunch from The Farmhouse kitchen lead by Chef Sherwin. This will be a nice opportunity for us to talk and share around the table.

Head Space: We know life can be really busy so this is a day to take back for yourself. To encourage your passions, connect with new people and release some creativity. It is a Sunday so please feel free to stretch it out, you would be more than welcome to come early and read the papers in the lounge or stay late and enjoy an evening walk or meal. You can really press pause and make a night of it, staying over in one of The Farmhouse beautiful rooms the night before or on the Sunday night (you can still be back at your desk by 9am but after a great nights sleep and a proper Farmhouse breakfast).

Questions?

We will build in lots of opportunities to ask any questions - technical, business, anything!
